25-40% of what we throw away could be composted through backyard composting. Composting food scraps, leaves, grass clippings, non-recyclable paper such as napkins, shredded paper and paper towels will help reduce methane in the atmosphere and reduce our carbon footprint. Backyard composting can create valuable compost that can be added to gardens, trees, shrubs and lawns. Residents can also reduce the amount of trash they have which could potentially save residents money on trash disposal costs. For more information on backyard composting, check out the links we have provided below or call the Environmental Department at (507) 532-1307.
