In 2013, the Minnesota Legislature created the Corridors of Commerce program for the purpose of constructing, reconstructing and improving state highways with projects that are not currently in MN DOT’s improvement program. The goals of the Corridors of Commerce program are to provide additional highway capacity on segments that are currently bottlenecked and to improve the movement of freight along our state highways. Projects are ranked on several criteria including improved safety and community consensus. For the 2018 program cycle, MN DOT has selected $400 million of projects for the next round of the Corridors of Commerce program.
Four of the proposed projects are of interest to Lyon County residents. These projects include installing an interchange at Hwy 23/19 intersection in Marshall, installing a second interchange at Hwy 23/59 in Marshall, three additional passing lanes on Hwy 23 between Pipestone and Willmar, and a concrete resurface project between Russell and Pipestone. At the March 20, 2018, meeting of the Lyon County Board of Commissioners, the county board considered a resolution in support of these project.
